How was the Museum born?

Layout of the Museum Windows and their logic

In year 1973, a few windows were set up to display the findings from explorations of the Speleologic Team of CAI Naples, in the premised that hosted the section at that time, in Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino. After the earthquake in 1980, those premises had to be left void.

In 1984 the Section had the opportunity of being hosted in Castel dell'Ovo, that had just been restored. Dr. Piciocchi, the team leader, got much wider rooms, and planned the layout in more and better windows. He adopted a chronological criterion, emphasizing the evolution of human articrafts throughout Prehistory. This choice was, and still is, functional to the purpose of being as clear as possible in presenting the findings to school groups visiting the Museum.

The following scheme introduces the sequence of periods in human prehistory, focusing on the technological evolution in stone processing.

The cards that make up the Museum Photographic Archive enable to make virtual windows, sorted by finding place.
Reading the artifacts in this way enables to understand the features of the presence of our ancestors in the caves or in the external shelters where such artifacts were found.
